Welcome to Your First 90 Days as an Optician

This guide breaks your first three months into focused phases so you build confidence systematically and never feel lost. Use it alongside your worksheets and checklists.

Phase 1 — Days 1–30: Learn the Landscape

  • Learn the layout of the lab, dispensary, and frame boards
  • Understand the daily workflow (check-in, dispensing, lab orders)
  • Memorize 10 core frame brands and their key features
  • Shadow a senior optician for at least 3 full patient interactions per day
  • Learn how to read a basic eyeglass prescription (sphere, cylinder, axis)
  • Understand the difference between single vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses
  • Review HIPAA basics and patient privacy protocols

💡 Ask questions freely. Nobody expects you to know everything in week one. Write everything down.

Phase 2 — Days 31–60: Build Your Skills

  • Perform frame adjustments under supervision (temples, nose pads, screws)
  • Take accurate PD measurements independently
  • Learn to use the lensometer to verify a prescription
  • Understand lens materials: CR-39, polycarbonate, Trivex, high-index
  • Learn the top 5 anti-reflective coating brands and their benefits
  • Complete your first unsupervised dispensing with a patient
  • Practice handling common patient objections (price, transitions, progressives)

💡 Focus on accuracy over speed. Double-check every Rx before ordering.

Phase 3 — Days 61–90: Gain Confidence

  • Handle a full patient flow start-to-finish with minimal supervision
  • Understand insurance basics (VSP, EyeMed, Medicaid — coverage basics)
  • Dispense a progressive lens and educate the patient on adaptation
  • Troubleshoot a basic Rx complaint (blur, tilt, distortion)
  • Begin studying for your ABO or CPO exam
  • Contribute to a team training or morning briefing
  • Complete all competency checklists in this kit

💡 You belong here. Trust your training, ask when unsure, and celebrate small wins.

Key Reminders for Every Day

  • →Greet every patient with eye contact and a smile — first impressions matter.
  • →Always verify the prescription before ordering — never assume.
  • →If you don't know, say "Let me find out for you" — never guess on medical info.
  • →Clean and organize your frame boards daily — it reflects your professionalism.
  • →Document everything — adjustments, complaints, patient preferences.
